Autumn 2024

Welcome to Year 5!

Year 5 News

Autumn Term 2 is in full swing and we have been super busy! So far, we have taken part in a Guy Fawkes Reading Comprehension, TTRS/ Numbots Day (which featured a fantastic catwalk), Remembrance, Children In Need, Ellington’s Got Talent and a trip to the Discovery Museum! We have also started practising our Christmas songs and we have our own in class Christmas countdown!

Maths

In maths, we have been looking at fractions and decimals. We took on the challenge of rounding decimals to the nearest whole then to the nearest tenth then we moved onto equivalent fractions, simplifying fractions and finding fractions of an amount. I was amazed with the children’s brilliant TTRS skills and on Pudsey Bear Day, we held an in class ‘Pudsey Maths Challenge’ the children were fantastic and super enthusiastic while racing to solve the maths challenge.

English

We are still reading Kensuke’s Kingdom, and working on our reading VIPERS skills. In English we are producing a newspaper report on Steve Irwin (we have discovered some super interesting facts) and have also been working on simple, compound and complex sentences. Our next unit will be a drama script based on the Literacy Shed video ‘The Alchemist’s Letter’.

History

Our new history topic is the Tudors, we have created our own timelines to show an understanding of where the Tudors are within our history. It has been wonderful to see the children engage and explore our fantastic in class Tudor display which has different books and artefacts for the Tudor times. We are super excited to continue to learn about the tyrant King Henry VIII.

French

In French, we've started learning how to say if we have a pet, we have been working on discovering the names for household pets.

Well done Year 5 for working hard and having fun! You are all embracing life at Ellington School. Myself and Mr. Liddle are super proud.

Best wishes,

Year 5 News

A brilliant first term for Year 5! The children have settled in and have worked super hard this term. Year 5 - Keep up the hard work, happiness and pride next term!

Maths

In maths, the children have been absolutely fantastic with the four operations. Starting with column addition then subtraction of 4-digit numbers, we then moved onto 2-digit x 2-digit multiplication which the children amazed me with their skills! We finished with 4-digit division by a 1-digit number. I encourage the children to continue to practise these at home when they can. The children should also continue to use TTRS and practise their timetables as these are crucial. We have started fractions, we will begin looking at equivalent fractions before starting to find fractions of an amount. The children have demonstrated a great love and enjoyment of maths, they demonstrate our school value of ‘happiness’ well during maths.

English

I am so proud of the children’s most recent piece in English. Everyone has shown a great interest when writing our non-chronological report on the events of Nagasaki and Hiroshima in 1945. The children have been so enthusiastic when learning about this pivotal event in history and they all produced some beautiful writing and publishing when it came to their non-chronological reports.

We have taken part in a recycling workshop where we learnt about the importance of recycling and we also took part in STEMFEST in Space where we learnt about Space & Defence Ltd, careers in space and Monster Black Hole (we even got to experience what a trip into a black hole would be like! Finally, we worked with reception, demonstrating great teamwork skills to create our very own ‘Be Bright, Be Seen’ scarecrow.

Check out our STEMFEST posters:

Year 5 have taken part in an NSPCC assembly and activity session based on 'Speak Out, Stay Safe.' The children all created fantastic posters ready for our NSPCC visitors. We had a great afternoon learning about the NSPCC. We even got to meet 'Buddy'!
Year 5 took part in an Online Safety workshop then a 'Press Play Experience' this allowed the children to experience and understand the potential risks of not staying safe online.

Year 5 News

We are off to a fantastic start in Year 5! The children have settled in beautifully and have shown great enthusiasm in their learning.

Maths

In maths, we have completed our baseline tests for Big Maths and have started our place value unit. We began with 3-digit numbers, before exploring numbers up to one million. We have been learning to order, compare and round numbers using our knowledge and understanding of place value. The children have adapted very well to the high expectations of independent work in year 5. We aim to show resilience in order to complete difficult problem-solving tasks.

English

Our writing stimulus this term is Rock, Paper, Scissors. The children have been working hard on creating exciting first-person narratives, using adverbial phrases to add detail and bring their stories to life. We're also focusing on handwriting to ensure everyone can write clearly and neatly.

Geography

In Geography, we've been exploring our big question, ‘What is life like in the Alps?’ The children have been investigating the location of the Alps on a map and are beginning a small case study on Innsbruck, learning about what makes this city so special.

French

In French, we've started learning how to say the date, and the class is enjoying practising their new vocabulary!

Science

Our focus in Science is on life cycles. We've been exploring the different stages of life in mammals, amphibians, invertebrates and looking at how they grow and develop over time.

It’s been a wonderful start to the year, and myself and Mr. Liddle are very proud of the Year 5’s. Keep up the brilliant reading and the TTRS!
